In the plaza at Santa Fe, Josefina saw the
U.S. flag
for the first time. Its stars and stripes of
red, white, and blue were so different from the
Mexican flag
she was used to.
A shiny metal
mirror
brought by American traders
also caught Josefina’s eye.
But it was a desert
tortoise
that led Josefina
to the biggest surprise of all!
